Brazil: Pig slaughter up 2.5% year-on-year in second quarter

Santa Catarina continues to lead the way in pig slaughter, with 29.1% of the national share, followed by Paraná (21.9%) and Rio Grande do Sul (16.8%).

In the second quarter of 2024, 14.57 million head of pigs were slaughtered, an increase of 2.5% compared to the same period in 2023 and an increase of 3.9% compared to the first quarter of 2024.

The slaughter of 358,72 thousand more head of pigs in the second quarter of 2024 compared to last year was driven by increases in 17 of the 24 Federative Units. Among the states with a share of at least 1.0%, there were increases in Paraná (+178.12 thousand head), Santa Catarina (+58.95 thousand head), Minas Gerais (+58.84 thousand head), São Paulo (+30.89 thousand head), Rio Grande do Sul (+23.10 thousand head), Goiás (+20.38 thousand head), and Mato Grosso (+8.59 thousand head). On the other hand, the most significant drop occurred in Mato Grosso do Sul (-14.67 thousand head).

Due to the floods in the state, Rio Grande do Sul saw the lowest May figure in four years.
