Canada’s swine industry outlook for 2025

The Canadian swine herd is projected to remain stable through 2025, with pork production expected to rise by 1% compared to 2024. This growth is driven by increased slaughter numbers and heavier carcass weights, with Western Canada leading the expansion despite a contraction in Eastern Canada. Key factors include strong sow productivity and better utilization of slaughter capacity, particularly in Western regions. Although live exports to the U.S. are expected to decline slightly, export demand for Canadian pork remains strong, especially in Asian markets, where strengthening currencies support higher export volumes. Meanwhile, Canadian pork imports are projected to decrease, following reduced domestic consumption and increased export opportunities. The U.S. will continue to dominate Canadian pork exports, though geopolitical tensions could impact trade flows.
