EU pork market: Production gains, weaker export in first half of the year

Pig meat production in the EU-27 grew by 2% in the first six months of 2024 compared to 2023, reaching 10.5 million tones.
Growth was mainly led by Poland and then Germany which both countries are suspended for exporting to most Asian countries due to ASF. On the other hand Spain the largest EU hog producer, experienced a decline.

The increase in production was largely due to a rise in slaughter numbers, totaling 110 million head, with Poland leading the increase.
Denmark saw a reduction in slaughter numbers despite production growth, likely due to heavier carcass weights. Spain’s slaughter numbers also dropped significantly.
Trade:
China, the largest market for EU pork, reduced its imports due to increased competition from Brazil, the US, and Canada, along with economic challenges.
