Piglet Imports: In the first half of 2024, Spain imported 1,130,148 piglets from the Netherlands. There has been a steady increase in these imports from 2016 to 2024.
The most significant growth occurred between 2017 and 2018, with imports almost quadrupling. Since 2021, imports have consistently surpassed 800,000 piglets per semester, reaching over 1 million in both 2023 and 2024.
The 2024 figure represents an 11% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Finishing Pig Imports: There was a notable increase in imports of finishing pigs from the Netherlands starting in the second half of 2020, with imports rising from 9,316 animals in the first half of 2020 to 40,726 in the second half, a 337% increase. However, since 2022, while still higher than pre-2021 levels, imports have been declining, reaching 21,201 head in the first half of 2024, a 16.84% decrease compared to the same period in 2023.
