Van Rooi Group Introduces Verde Varken Foundation

Helmond, September 2024 – Van Rooi Group proudly announces the establishment of the Verde Varken Foundation. The creation of the foundation formalizes the culmination of years of intensive collaboration with pioneering pig farmers and chain partners. The foundation is dedicated to maximum transparency, high animal welfare standards, and sustainable environmental protection.

Collaboration with a Focus on Animal Welfare and Environmental Protection

The foundation was established with a select group of pig farmers who meet the stringent chain requirements of Verde Varken. These conditions go beyond merely ‘a better life for the animal’. The foundation strives for a value chain that ensures the production of high-quality and affordable pork. This production quality is based on environmental awareness, sustainability, biodiversity, circularity, and transparency within the chain.

Data-Driven Progress

By collaborating with dedicated partners, Verde Varken aims to make a positive impact on food production and the well-being of our planet. In addition to pig farmers, parties from genetics, feed producers, veterinarians, and transporters are also affiliated with the foundation. All parties involved work together and in close consultation to continually improve the chain. This process is supported by data collected through the chain management system developed by Van Rooi Group.

The participating pig farmers, in collaboration with Mérieux NutriSciences | Blonk, have also accurately mapped the carbon footprint of their pig production. This was done using a Life Cycle Approach (LCA) in which factors such as feed composition (compound feed, loose raw materials, and wet by-products), herd development, barn type, manure processing, and energy use were analyzed.

Verde Varken: A New Standard for Sustainable Pig Farming

What makes Verde Varken unique is its emphasis on the delicate balance between nature, animal, and
good entrepreneurship. The chain bears the responsibility for managing processes but is also committed to continuous improvement, in close collaboration with all involved partners. Step by step, efforts are being made to further sustainability in the pig sector, with special attention to improving animal welfare.

Win-win situation for all partners

Addy Van Rooi, of Van Rooi Group, states that the success of the ambitious, sustainable food production depends on the involvement and benefit of all parties in the chain.

“The pig farmers within the Verde Varken chain are rewarded with a chain-specific price.

We hope that many chain partners will join Verde Varken. Together, we will continue to develop the foundation

and adjust processes to be prepared for the challenges of the future.”
